Discovering goat milk

Discovering goat milk

A couple of weeks ago, I wrote here about how consumers are choosing goat milk much more often. Realizing I had no first hand knowledge of goat milk beyond things you could make with them such as chèvre and goat butter (both things I love!), I decided to get better informed.

Trying goat milk for the first time is kinda like getting a tattoo: it”s easier if you do it with a friend. So, as I set out to explore my goat milk curiosities, I peer pressured Rebecca, the blogger behind much admired Ezra Pound Cake (how can”t you love this blog just for its name alone!) to join me. Check out her blog today to discover how she enjoyed our mutual virgin goat milk experience. And, read on for my own story.

As you can tell from the picture above, I decided to go big or go home. I purchased all of the goat milk products at my local Planet Organic store. Besides trying them as-is from the package, I also used the liquid products to make butterscotch pudding (something I do pretty much every weekend at Oliver”s request) and in a cup of coffee. Here are my tasting notes:

- Goat”s Milk Strawberry Ice Cream (sweetened with honey): This ice cream is incredibly light textured and so wonderfully delicious. The finish has just enough of the same tang that makes chèvre so appealing to cut the sweetness of the honey and make each bite an adventure. While I doubt kids will like this ice cream, it”s a wonderful adult treat. I can see it complimenting rhubarb pie or crisp perfectly.

- 2% Goat Milk: consumed cold, this milk is just slightly different from cow”s milk. I can see people who like cow”s milk but can”t digest it finding this milk a very good substitute for their cereal and cold milk drinking pleasure. In a latte, however, it didn”t work as well since the stronger end note flavours were greatly accentuated when the milk was heated.

- Organic Whole Goat Milk: I really liked this rich and creamy milk cold and can see it being interchangeable with homogenized cow”s milk for use cold. I used this milk to make butterscotch pudding and I have to say, it wasn”t entirely successful. As the pudding cooked, the heady aroma of stewed mutton was rank in my kitchen. Gross when mingled with butterscotch! And, when the pudding was cooled, the same slight acidic goatiness that worked for the strawberry ice cream was in the finish of the pudding. The goat milk was simply not interchangeable with the cow”s milk in this instance.

What I learned: goat milk is pretty delicious cold but, if you”re going to use it in baking stick to flavour profiles that have an acidic finish such as berries, chocolate, apples, citrus and the like.

The politics of AIG

The politics of AIG

The political fallout from the AIG bailout will be massive. With $165 million in US taxpayers' money going to pay executive bonuses, the Obama administration is bailing itself for a backlash. It looks impotent and ineffective as Bernanke tells 60 Minutes he slammed the phone down a few times in that conversation about AIG. But in the end, he says, there was no choice. AIG's tentacles were spread too far.

It coincides with a New York Times/CBS news poll, reported here, showing that 83% of Americans want the US Government to cap executive salaries and politicians pushing the Obama administration to stop the payouts. Some might say that's only fair, but as columnist Thomas Friedman says, fairness has left the building. Congress is shelling out hundreds of billions of dollars on toxic assets and the money is going to keep coming. While people say it's unfair, the bailout is designed to stop the building from burning down, not to build a new one.

"Some people estimate a trillion dollars or more private capital sitting on the sidelines just waiting to come in. You can see it last week in the stock market…. No one wants to be late, no one wants to miss this," Friedman says. "It's sitting out there but it's not going to come in until there is some certainty on what the rules of the game are. And the problem with getting that certainty is two-fold. One is the fairness issue. It's gonna be unfair. People who don't deserve to be bailed out are going to be bailed out. That's one problem. And the other problem is the incredible complexity of the issue. We've never seen this much leverage…. It's all over the world wrapped in this much complexity and started in America. Untangling this incredible Gordian knot we've created is really going to be difficult."

There are no easy solutions here and we are in for a protracted period of ugliness. The fascinating part will be watching how the politicians handle it to minimize the inevitable collateral damage.

The Starter Wife Style

For Sex & the City fans, what do you do when your favorite show has ended and the movie has moved into the video/DVD market? Do you cry over your Manolos, bemoaning the lack of fashion inspiration on the tube? Do you sob into your Cosmos? No need to grieve any longer, a new fashion maven is on the scene and for any of us over the age of 21, she's more than welcome.

Premiering tonight (October 10) on the USA Network is The Starter Wife, starring Debra Messing. She plays Molly Kagan, a woman who finds herself divorced and newly single. I don't have any more details than that, but I do have some details on the fashion you'll see on the show.

Excerpted from an interview on eye4style, lead stylist for the show, Agata Maskiewics, says this in response to: What role does fashion play in The Starter Wife?

"Fashion is almost like another character in The Starter Wife. So much of the personality of the actors comes through in the clothing they wear. Our goal is to have the audience as excited about the fashions as they are the characters. We want the people at home to feel as though they can hear the ruffle of Molly's Zac Posen silk dress and smell the exquisite leather of her Manolos. We want them to daydream about getting into Molly's closet and have the opportunity to dress from it everyday as she does. And yes, the closet is huge, since as a Hollywood woman, she never repeats an outfit!"

Hitachi and Seiyu working on new bulb

Hitachi lighting and Seiyu are reportedly working together to create a light bulb that can be used for up to 30,000 consecutive hours. The bulbs have a fluorescent lamp that detaches from an arc tube unit to work. While the bulbs will last 30,000 hours, you will only be able to use the arc tube unit for 10,000 hours. Look for the bulbs to hit Japan in October for around $14.

Machismo may explain why men's lives are shorter than women's

A new survey is reporting that the more macho a man is, the more likely he is to resist preventive health measures like prostate exams.

That helps explain, researchers say, why US women currently average 5 years more of life, to age 80, than men do. The researchers speculate that especially macho men don”t like taking advice from anyone else, even a doc.

If the data hold up, I wonder if there isn”t a less psychological, more human explanation. We all secretly believe we”re immortal–at least until hair-raising experience teaches each of us that death isn”t going to make a special exception in our own case. Some of us are forced to learn that hard lesson sooner than others. Maybe men whose ideal is the tough guy are able to hang on to the fantasy longer than most.
